Tips for Using the Database

Find more resources, avoid frustration, become an effective researcher by using these searching strategies.

Boolean Searching

To be successful in your studies, you have to be an efficient researcher.  This means using Boolean searching techniques to find information.

The most common Boolean operators are AND, OR, NOT. (Make sure to capitalize these terms, as it is required for some engines. Please see the following article for a full explanation:

Developing a Search Strategy

Taking Boolean searching to the next level, you need to develop a search strategy based on your topic.  This tutorial from Monash University provides a good primer for understanding best strategies for searching databases on any particular topic.

Achieving Better Search Results

One of the ways to expand or narrow results is by reviewing a database’s Thesaurus.  The Thesaurus is how the database organizes knowledge.  For example, you may want to search for the psychology term “Executive Functioning”.  However, if you only searched that one term, you would miss out on many quality resources.  Why?  In the EBSCOProvider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, ebooks and discovery services database, the term “Executive Functioning” must be used with “Cognitive Ability” to retrieve the best results.  Here is a brief tutorial on EBSCOProvider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, ebooks and discovery services’s thesaurus.

Article Isn’t Available

Although EBSCOProvider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, ebooks and discovery services is primarily a full-text database, there are resources not available in full-text, sometimes due to copyright restrictions, or publisher embargoes. However, it does not mean that the article is not located in either ProQuestTool to find scholarly journals, books, video, audio, newspapers, and more. or SAGEAn academic journal publisher covering a wide array of topics. databases for which we also have a subscription or in an online search. In cases where you cannot find the full-text in EBSCOProvider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, ebooks and discovery services, we have provided a brief presentation that outlines key information strategies.  This is located in our “Learning Support” section, but the link here as well:
