Searching the Web for Sources: Social Networks

Another search strategy is to use your social and professional networks to help you find information.

  1. Set up RSS (Really Simple Syndicating) feeds of your favourite online academics or professionals in your field in a reader (such as Google Reader) to give you personalized access to resources.
  2. Follow your favourite authors on Twitter or subscribe to Twitter #tag networks, or a Facebook group that you are interested in.
  3. There are also more and more social network sites focusing on connecting scholars with each other and important research, such as edu.  You can join networks, start a network, share research, and read the new research.

All of these methods are great for finding information. Don’t forget, however, that you still must read and evaluate the quality of the literature you are being shown.
